John Hancock pays a belated call on President George Washington.

October 26, 1789

[10/25-Holbrook] Two days after Washington’s arrival, Hancock, claiming an attack of gout had delayed him, is carried on a litter to the Ingersoll Inn at today’s 10 Tremont Street. Initially, Hancock had maintained that it should be up to a visiting president to call on the governor of a host state. In abandoning that position, Hancock symbolically accepts the primacy of the federal authority over that of individual states. Washington pays Hancock a reciprocal visit the next day.
